2017 - How Wool on Wheels Happened

April - Humble Beginnings

Text from image reads: There should be a truck that sells yarn as it drive around the neighbourhood in the evening. And we would hear it and run out with our money and stand on the curb, waiting for it. Like an ice cream truck, but, you know, with yarn.

Comment reads: I don't know about a truck but if I liaised with a LOT of indie dyers I could do a roadie with a starter collection but visit more dyers along the way, blog it, and have pop up stops. Like Woolfest on the road. Hopefully fellow yarn lovers could put me up on the way. Would be an amazing road trip and people would be able to see and touch all the lovely stuff we see online.

Comment reads: It started with the below posts but I can't stop thinking about how to bring this to life. So, indie dyers/accessory makers: if I was able to arrange a contract whereby I sold your stock on your behalf for a small commission (to cover gas) so I could drive around (some of) the North Island with a pop up with all your wares (think Woolfest on Wheels) would you be keen? This would take an insane amount of planning but oh my gosh if it worked it would be pretty dam magical #DaydreamsCanBeReal.

May - Ramping Up

Courtesy of The Wayback Machine, I have dredged up some snippets from my original weebly website and blog....

Yarn on the move...

It started out with a meme shared on Facebook...and now it is a fully fledged project. Wool on Wheels NZ will be making it's first road trip around the North Island in October 2017. It won't be on a truck, but it will be better than ice-cream!

It started like this...

When I'm on Facebook I'm usually in a group called For the Love of All Things Woolly (which is New Zealand based). Someone posted the below meme and it wedged itself in my mind and I thought to myself...how could I make this work? So I posted a feeler out to indie dyers about the diea of acting as a commissioned agent as a way to fuel a woolly road trip and a few people were keen. I tucked the interested parties away and worked on the finer details. My original road trip was always solo and locations would be determined by whether there was a yarn/craft shop in the vicinity. Of course, the clincher would be whether I ended up spending more money on gas or end product - either way I needed to save a heck-tonne of case to survive this road trip (and by survive, I mean enhance my stash with copious amounts of wool, buttons and other crafty knick knacks *ahe* I mean, er, craft requirements). The other point of this venture was to get around New Zealand more, reconnect with my own back yar. And so, I plan on bringing to you... Wool on Wheels

June

Pop ups hit the calendar. I want to point out that NOBODY knew me. I was some random knitter that built an idea off a meme, and then canvassed traders at Woolfest with that idea. I also got approached by dyers that heard about what I was doing and wanted to be on the yarn wagon. I put together a contract of sorts as this was a very big trust exercise (and still is) and I wanted to keep everything above board.

I ended up collecting 36 suppliers for the debut road show.

stitching up a road trip

If you're new to the party, Wool on Wheels NZ will be a pop up shop around the mid to lower North Island in October. Dates and locations listed. Announcements will follow when the venues are confirmed for each location and as more suppliers come on board, but you can also check back to this page as the website now has permanent info pages - yay! You can't have Wool on Wheels without wool. I am super excited to share some of the suppliers that I will be representing on the road! This will increase as I spread the word, but the lovely people behind these brands have confirmed their support so please raise your needles to: Black Forest Yarns, Kiwi-Yarn-A , NanaCindy NZ, Propser Yarns, Valley of Lost Things, Skylights Yarns, Yarn Breeder. I know many dyers will be busy with Woolfest this weekend, but if you've been keeping an eye on this project there is also an info page set up for suppliers. Special Announcment. A treat if you read all the way to the end. A limited edition totate bag will be released for this road trip. As I am not a dyer myself, I wanted to create something evocative that was also practical and went with the wool theme. I know you're going to love what I've come up with. There's all sorts of boring things that have to happen like design and product, but you heard it here first and I'll share more about it when it's ready for the road.

October - Hitting the Road

I was new at the documentation thing so I have very few photos from the debut trip, but I have some. This is from the Tauranga pop up at Chapel Cafe.

This was from the Napier one.

This is from the Wellington one.

And I think this was me re-organising myself at my brother's place in Wellington

And this is from Palmerston North

And this is from Taupō.

In all honesty I can't remember a lot from this trip (7 years on). There are snippets peeking through though...

I was still employed at the time and my colleagues very much enjoyed the yarn deliveries to the office. We all stopped for morning or afternoon tea so I could see what colours were becoming part of my inventory.

I remember the full feeling in my chest when people descended on the pop up - like I couldn't believe it was real even though it was happening right in front of me.

And I think it was on the drive from Napier to Taupō, but I remember knowing that this was something that I wanted to keep doing, and (after other contributing factors) I quit my job and embraced self employment. Something I never thought I'd do.
